A sweet pastry made of layers of filo dough, filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey.

Ingredients

  • 1 package of filo dough
  • 2 cups of mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios)
  • 1 cup of melted butter
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Chop the nuts and mix them with cinnamon.
  3. Butter a baking dish and layer 10 sheets of filo, brushing each with melted butter.
  4. Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the filo.
  5. Repeat layers, alternating between filo and nuts, until all ingredients are used.
  6. Cut the baklava into diamond shapes.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes until golden brown.
  8. In a pot, combine sugar, water, and vanilla. Boil for 10 minutes.
  9. Pour the syrup over the baklava as soon as it comes out of the oven.
  10. Let it cool before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh filo dough for best results.
  • Customize nut types to your preference.
  • Allow baklava to soak in syrup for several hours for better flavor.
